Well, its about that time of the year again! What does everyone have planned for this winter?
I'll be racing my 96 Honda Civic.

and maybe TK will be kind enough to barrow me his tires. :)

I plan on driving my '90 Mazda Protege. Should be fun, I just have to get the darned clutch/flywheel replaced ASAP.
It doesn't have its forced induction yet, that'll be like next year or something. But the fact that it's 4WD should give it a bit of extra fun on snow and ice!

They work incredible! I saw a few cars sliding around on some roads last night, but not the blizzaks! HUGE difference from some half-life all-seasons to some bran new snow tires.
Thanks again TK for your assistance

I just put some snow tires on the front of my DSM. pulled pretty good last night in the snow, but the rear still like to slide a little bit with some old all seasons back there. Might need to pick up 2 more snow tires.

Blizzaks are da bomb!!
I went out and drove around last night just playing in the protege, to see how it turned, accelerated, and braked in the snow. Pretty nice. I think the engine needs more power so I can rotate the car better though. I'm pretty sure that I'm thinking the car will handle more like a CWD vehicle than it actually does. It's more like an FWD with a little extra boost at the back, I just need to learn it's personality.
Drove it this morning on some (unplowed) backroads to work, at speed it's definitely a little different. almost TOO light in the back, I think off-throttle oversteer could be a pretty harrowing experience. with FWD, giving extra gas when sliding seemed to pull the car where it needed to go. But now, with the rear wheels also driven, it's a fine line between giving too much and not enough gas.
But, keeping a steady foot on the pedal, and steering smoothly, it didn't seem to step out except when I wanted it to. This is going to be a FUN winter car!!
What are some tips and observations from other AWD winter drivers?

Um yeah. There is a reason they highly recommend putting on snow tires in sets of 4.
Just 2 in the front will be great if you want a lot of practice correcting oversteer.

A lot of people think AWD is the shit in winter. Actually the only advantage they have is acceleration. They can not corner or brake any faster.
Recommendations from me: In a corner get the back end out early (oversteer) then do not gas it until the car is pointing where you want it to go.
AWD will not pull a car through a corner like a FrontWD car will.

Throttle will not make you turn more. Once you spin those front wheels, you lose the mechanical grip and you will more than likely plow in whatever direction that you have the most momentum. Your tires only have so much grip, and trying to accelerate forward will take away some of the grip that your tire is using to turn.
SgtRauksauff
12-02-2008, 10:49 AM
After playing around on some more roads, I'm almost NOT liking AWD as much as I was hoping to. I'm used to the FWD being able to pull me through, but with the back powered also, I'm having to be much more precise with throttle input (lol, it reminds me of one of the Initial D episodes), especially cresting a slippery hill that's also a right turn. Got my heart pumping a bit on the way to work this morning with that one.
If I didn't have to be careful of oncoming traffic, it would be fine.
meh. I'm getting used to it the more I play with it. It's just different enough that I'm having to relearn things. Like when I'd normally lift to rotate my FWD through the corner, I've got to keep it steady now, which means that I've got to slow down a bit earlier so as not to lose grip after the apex of a corner and drive into oncoming traffic or the opposite ditch.
I also think that with a peppier engine (the sohc 1.8 isn't really much on power at all, somewhere on the order of 103hp, 108lb-ft at the crank), I'd be able to use torque quicker, getting the back pointing where I need it, so I can use the rear for acceleration in the right direction rather than having it push the front in the wrong direction.
I need another RallyX and some ice to drive on for more practice. C'mon, cold front!!!

Ahh. One must learn to not go into the corner too fast with FrontWD. That way you can exploit that unused grip to pull you through a turn. Also: sometimes on slippery surfaces spinning will gain you some traction.

it partially depends on the tires, I think. tires with nice edges on the tread blocks, specifically. If you're spinning, the edges have the possibility of grabbing and helping move the car in the direction the tires are spinning in.
just think of being on some sheet ice while moving forward at around 30 mph, and flipping the wheel lock to lock while spinning the tires. if the tire is spinning at the right speed, you can move the front of the car from side to side, and get at least a modicum of steering input. Spin the tires too fast, and you get nothing. Slowing down will end up transferring enough weight from the rear tires to make them want to pass you.
Throttle will not make you turn more. Once you spin those front wheels, you lose the mechanical grip and you will more than likely plow in whatever direction that you have the most momentum. Your tires only have so much grip, and trying to accelerate forward will take away some of the grip that your tire is using to turn.
the original context of this was my AWD protege. I think, with the center VLSD, that when the front tires start spinning, it transfers power to the rear pretty quickly. this in turn helps swing the back out, which lets you use the front tires to accelerate in a straight line, rather than splitting the friction between turning and accelerating.
With a FWD only car though, there is nothing to help you point the car to maximize front-tire grip, other than a flick or an ebrake or the like. Too fast, and you can't even use those, you just take a tangent right off the curve into a ditch. So, you keep the car at a speed that you know will not be too much for the angle of the corner, and once you're through the corner far enough to make it count, you can start pouring on the gas again, right below the point where your tire rpm is too high.
dang, I'm rambling. and really tired. cool thread, though.

So we got some good snow today, i tested TK's theory of wheel spin. TK's theory test #1 was a fail. maybe i'm doing something wrong.
anyways, I am pretty sure some people have never driven in snow before. The blizzaks did a swell job on the way to work today, too bad everyone else doesnt have some decent tires.

You have to modulate the throttle carefully. Think of a cat scratching for traction while going around a corner.
Hey there is a cool picture of my car in my posts now.

Anyplace that sells hardware...
http://ace.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pACE-993370reg.jpg
Most housecats are declawed, hence their scrabbling when they have to run around corners on linoleum or hardwood. Press too hard, and the claw slides (too much gas and the tire slides).
just the right amount of pressure, and the cat can be quick and nimble.
There's gotta be a reason for it, since watching most WRC runs have the tires spinning always when they go around corners.

I think the idea of spinning wheels is that the extra energy of a spinning wheel cause the tires to dig into the snow and gain some grip. Kind of like how you ram your shovel into the snow make it goes deeper than just pushing it down. I had to turn my traction control off one time last year, and spin my wheels all the way up my drive way. Now if it was on ice, it would be all over.
Those screws are scary. Co-drive a car with them last year once, it's either faster than you have any business on snow/ice, or no grip and going backward.

The drywall screws were insane in Tom's Nissan. Lifting the inside front tire coming off corners on ice isn't right.
Bolts tires have slightly less total traction, but they're a lot more predictable.

Hey guys, I've been lurking about on these forums for awhile now (wanted to give ice racing a try since about 3 years ago). I'm planning on attending tomorrow's event, so I had a few questions.
Is there an address I can punch into a GPS to get there? What time does the event usually end?
I'll be making the drive from about 30 minutes south of Chicago. :( It'll be a long drive, but I'm sure it will be worth it. I've been autocrossing on and off for 7 years now, so hopefully I won't make too much of a fool out of myself! I drive a '92 Talon AWD ... It's not very impressive, just something I've cobbled together from summer jobs. There's not much a poor law school kid can do to his car. :P
Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow! And thanks for the answers.

I looked around on Winnebago County's website, and the address for the boat launch is 1801 Grundman Lane.
Google maps shows it pretty accurately:

I come to find out the Aisin/Warner transmission is very picky. I test drive it after two drains and its running great. Today I go out and don't have 1st or reverse. They Mobil1 Multi Vehicle says is applicable for all Dextron 3 transmissions. Not so... This is why I'm switching it over to manual over the summer. I get to drain out the 8 qts of Mobil 1 I've put in the last 3 drains and hope the normal conventional Dextron 3 brings back my tranny. Otherwise this is gonna get expensive.... I get to drain out the 8 qts of Mobil 1 I've put in the last 3 drains and hope the normal conventional Dextron 3 brings back my tranny. Otherwise this is gonna get expensive.... Thank god I know the head Saab mechanic from GB! So lesson learned just because something is compatible doesn't mean it works.... Maybe I'll see you guys next week. Don't count on it.
I'm no expert on Saab, but I think that the damage may well have been done by whatever made the original fluid brownish/black, rather than putting new fluid in.
Just some interesting info on Aisin AW: Aisin AW is currently the highest producer of automatic transmissions in the world, and started as a joint venture between Borg Warner and Aisin Seiki in 1969, and continued through 1987. Aisin Seiki makes transmissions for heavy vehicles, while Aisin AW does the light vehicles.
Back on topic, I have heard accounts from others that sometimes after flushing a tranny, the new fluid essentially washes off the grimy deposits of the old stuff, removing any friction that was to be had. I heard this about both ford escorts/mazda proteges (with the crappy 4EAT transmission, non AW), and also about Volvos, which also use AW transmissions, although not the same as the Saab ones, as far as I know.
Oh, and here's some crazy guy in an Audi...

Yes I drive the Saab. The car's transmission may be shot. I changed it yesterday and it was brownish black. I picked up 6 quarts Mobil Multi Vehicle ATF on the way home. Hey Guy, I agree with sarge. Most likely draining the old fluid and replacing it with new washed off grimy deposits causing the tranny to act up. I work at a small indpendant repair shop and have seen this a few times. Mostly on high mileage no maintenance automatic transmissions where the fluid comes out brownish black. I use Lucas Transmission Fix-Stops Slips (24oz fl. white plastic bottle) to bring the tranny back to life. This trans additive works most of the time on trannys with no reverse and or slipping gears do to burned clutch bands or hard sealing rubber rings. This stuff is very thick, honey like. Run the plastic bottle under hot water for 15 to 20 minutes to speed things up. I would keep the Mobil 1 in the tranny, just drain 1qt out and add Lucas stuff...Its worth a try at $10-$12per can. Hell, try two 24oz fl. cans. Over a year ago I had a 1997 BMW 540 with no reverse no forward gears and a costumer not willing to part with $$$$ (car was not worth new nor rebuilt tranny) 2 cans of Lucas transmission treatment made it happy again. I believe the BMW is still driving around. Like to call it "mechanic in a can". Have used it on European, Asian, domestics with success. Good luck...maybe we'll see you on the ice

yeah add one more to ur class, im running some POS all season tires with good tires on front and crap on the back so it should be interesting. The way it is looking I might be able to make it out to the night event on the 31st. The only thing is I dont have a helmet yet. Do they have loaner ones there?

Finally this morning, fixed that annoying squeak in heater blower housing. With all these cold temperatures, will need that heater working at 100% tomorrow morning, January 25th!
See you guys on the ice!

It was my first time on a Ice Rally-X event and I can say that I had a great time. I don't regret not even one bit the 3 hour drive to get to the event cause I had the chance to meet a group of very friendly people who like to have fun in the snow. - Thank You guys and I hope I can make it there ASAP.
I took a bunch of pictures but only with the 1-st group since I was in the 2-nd one.

Well I already flushed it 3 times with mineral dextron 3. Its better. But it still is pretty bad, currently it won't shift from 1st to 2nd(skipping 2nd possibly)/3rd until its at 4000 rpm/28mph. It cant get any worse so I'll try that Lucas stuff.
Look at post 2 http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119649
I want to thank you both for posting. It wasn't until someone brought up ice racing today that I remembered this forum.
This is my current help thread at Saab Central

Ill try that Lucas stuff tomorrow and see what happens.
Thanks Again,
